Why Choose a Therapist at Spacious Mind Counselling?
Choosing to see a therapist is the hardest part. The second-hardest part is picking the right helping hand for you. As the first way we’ll make your life a little easier, we’d like to provide a clear summary of what to expect of us, and of the specific reasons one of us might just have the helping hand you’re looking for.
1. Our experience. Between us, we have roughly 90-100 years as practicing therapists. Several of our longer-toothed therapists have about 10 years’ experience. Some of us have 5 years of experience as practicing therapists (equivalent to approximately 19 “therapy years”). Even our newer therapists typically come from a similar, complementary field that helped prepare them to be of service to you.
2. We’re a diverse group of people. There’s no such thing as a “typical” therapist here. Your therapist may be a lot like you or like the version of you from a parallel universe.
3. We’re not pompous. We try to avoid confusing jargon, we don’t try to act like people in other professions, and we don’t claim to have all the answers (though together we can find our way to them).
4. We can help on a wide range of issues. The “We Can Help With” page on our site should give you a good sense of what we can help with.
5. We continually learn and stay up-to-date on new research and approaches. It’s interesting, but even if it wasn’t, it’s important.
6. We’ll be around – and here for you – for a long time. Getting to know you, helping out however we can, and seeing your results keeps us bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
7. We do in-person therapy in Guelph, online therapy, or both.
8. We offer therapy at reduced rates, in some situations.
9. We can work with you wherever you are. (You don’t need to be in Guelph, or even nearby.)
10. You can get to know us first and make informed decisions. We’ve tried to make this site very detailed, and you can schedule a free consultation with the therapist who seems like the best fit for you.
11. You can always change therapists if you choose to, whether that’s after the free consultation, after 2 weeks, after a year, or never. Though it’s easier here than anywhere else, it’s still not always easy to figure out exactly what or whom you need. We understand, and nobody here will take it personally. We’re all just here to help.
12. We only hire therapists who want to spend their time helping you, our client, rather than marketing. The way we see it, if at least one of us is able to help you get from point A to point B, everything else takes care of itself.
13. We provide access to psychiatric assessments, adult ADHD assessments, and ASD assessments, without a year-long waitlist.
14. On the off-chance your challenge is something we can’t help with, we probably know someone who does and can refer you. Just tell us what’s on your mind.
15. This is not a “clinical” setting, which we don’t like any more than you do. How many deep insights have we had in a white room with harsh white lights, uncomfortable chairs, and nothing to look at but grubbed-over magazines? Exactly zero. Whether you choose to meet your therapist at the office or on a call from your home, you’ll feel at home and at ease.
16. We’re not part of some big organization. There is no parent company, hospital, private equity partner, etc. that lords over us and interferes with our ability to help in the way you need or want us to.
17. We’re responsive and communicative. Bankers’ hours aren’t our standard. Also, because we’re a small-to-medium practice, you’ll never be “just another client.” We can only help you if we get to know you, and our whole practice is organized around getting to know you better and better.
18. We don’t assume you’ll be with us forever. Whether it only takes a short time for us to untangle the knots together, or it’s a longer-term project, or you want to see your therapist continually for “maintenance” and kaizen, there’s no such thing as the “right” duration. Your goals are our goals. All we care about is that you get more out of life.
We hope that makes your decision-making 5% easier, but enough about us. You can book a free 20-minute consultation now to tell us about yourself and how we can help.
