Walk-and-Talk Therapy

How Can Walk & Talk Therapy Support You?

Walk & Talk Therapy, sometimes known as “nature therapy” or “forest bathing,” offers a different way of engaging in therapy, one that combines movement, conversation, and connection with the natural world. At our practice, we see this as more than just a change of setting; it’s an opportunity to support healing in a way that feels more grounded, embodied, and natural.

Promotes Calm and Nervous System Regulation

Being outdoors, surrounded by fresh air and natural elements, can help regulate the nervous system and create a greater sense of calm. You may find it easier to settle into therapy when they’re not confined to an office space, especially when working through stress, anxiety, or overwhelm.

Enhances Energy, Clarity, and Emotional Flow

Gentle movement like walking can increase blood flow and support mental clarity, focus, and emotional processing. This can be especially helpful when navigating low mood, feeling stuck, or working through complex life challenges.

Supports Openness and Self-Expression

Talking side-by-side, rather than face-to-face, often feels less intense and more natural. You may find it easier to open up about difficult topics, especially those involving shame, guilt, or vulnerability when the conversation unfolds more organically.

Fosters Connection with Nature

Spending time outdoors can deepen a sense of connection, not just with your therapist, but with yourself and your environment. Nature can offer a grounding backdrop for reflection, perspective, and meaning-making, which can be especially supportive in times of transition, grief, or personal growth.

Is Walk & Talk Therapy Right for You?

Walk & Talk Therapy is offered by select therapists on our team. If you’re curious about whether this approach might fit your needs, we encourage you to speak with your therapist to explore it together.

This format is typically best suited for individual therapy (ages 16+) and likely not best suited for couples or family sessions.

Getting Started with Walk & Talk Therapy

For new clients, we begin with at least one in-office or virtual session. This allows us to complete consent and intake, and to get to know each other in a more structured setting. From there, you and your therapist can decide whether Walk & Talk Therapy feels like a good fit.

Preparing for Your Session

  • Wear comfortable clothing and supportive walking shoes
  • Consider weather-appropriate items (e.g., sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, bug spray)
  • If weather conditions are poor, your therapist will work with you to reschedule or move the session indoors or online
  • If weather changes during your session, you can choose to continue, end early, or return to the office

Where Sessions Take Place

Sessions typically take place in and around local parks and neighbourhoods in Guelph. Your therapist will review route options with you ahead of time to ensure you feel comfortable with the setting.

Is This About Exercise?

While movement can have physical benefits, the focus of Walk & Talk Therapy is not exercise, it’s therapy. You’re always encouraged to move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, and to communicate any physical needs or limits.

Confidentiality Considerations

Because sessions take place in public spaces, there are some limits to confidentiality (e.g., the possibility of being overheard or seen). Your therapist will take steps to protect your privacy, and you’ll have a chance to discuss preferences and boundaries ahead of time.

You are always in control and if at any point you feel uncomfortable, you can pause, shift locations, or return to a more private setting.

If you’re interested in trying Walk & Talk Therapy, feel free to reach out or speak directly with your therapist to explore whether it’s the right fit for you.
