Psychotherapy for Teens Using Ontario Autism Program Funding
Why Teens on the Spectrum May Benefit from Counselling
Adolescence is a time of significant transition: identity is forming, independence is growing, and the path toward adulthood begins to take shape. For teens on the autism spectrum, this stage can come with added layers of complexity, especially after years of structured, goal-oriented supports. Psychotherapy can be a meaningful and valid way to support teens during this phase of life.
How the Ontario Autism Program Can Help
The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is a provincially funded program that provides direct funding to families of children and youth on the autism spectrum (up to age 17) to purchase eligible clinical services and supports.
Our therapists are members of regulated colleges in Ontario (CRPO and OCSWSSW), which means psychotherapy provided at Spacious Mind qualifies as an eligible core clinical service under OAP and is reimbursable to families.
What Your Teen Can Expect with a Spacious Mind Counselling Therapist
Many teens who access OAP funding have spent years in more directive forms of support such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, or behavioural interventions. These approaches are incredibly valuable but they often focus on skill-building, goals, and measurable outcomes.
Psychotherapy offers something different. It creates space for:
- Self-exploration rather than instruction
- Personal meaning-making rather than performance
- Emotional expression without needing to “get it right”
At this stage, and on the cusp of adulthood, having a place to reflect, question, and explore who you are can be deeply impactful.
A Different Kind of Relationship
In psychotherapy, the relationship itself becomes part of the work. Rather than being directed or coached, teens are met with:
- Unconditional positive regard
- Curiosity and respect for your inner world
- A collaborative, non-judgmental space
For many, this may be one of the first experiences of a relationship that isn’t focused on correcting, teaching, or evaluating. Here the focus is on shared curiosity understanding of themselves and their experience in a neurotypical world.
Supporting the Transition into Adulthood
Therapy can help teens navigate:
- Identity and self-understanding
- Social relationships and belonging
- Emotional regulation and self-worth
- Anxiety about the future, independence, or life direction
These are not problems to be “fixed,” but experiences to be understood and worked through in a supportive environment.
Using OAP Funding for Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy services provided by qualified professionals are an eligible and appropriate use of OAP funding. This allows families to access support that goes beyond skill-building and into deeper emotional and developmental work.
If you’re unsure how this fits within your child’s plan, we’re happy to help you understand how psychotherapy can be included.
It’s Not Too Late to Benefit
We understand that many families experience long wait times when accessing services through the OAP. Funding and opportunities for support don’t always arrive when they’re most needed.
Even so, meaningful change is always possible.
Teens don’t need to have started therapy earlier to benefit from it now. In fact, this stage of life can be one of the most powerful times to engage in therapy, when there is enough life experience to reflect on, and enough openness to shape what comes next.
If you’re considering psychotherapy for your teen using OAP funding, we’d be glad to connect and explore whether this approach feels like the right fit.
