Insomnia Counselling
Our therapists can help you sleep easy.
Tossing and turning all night long? While insomnia may have an underlying medical cause, it’s often the result of anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions. There are many potential contributing factors, both psychological and physiological, that our skilled therapists can help identify with you.
Over-the-counter sleep aids can only help you get so far. If you want to sleep easy, you need strategies to help you address the disturbing or racing thoughts that are keeping you awake. Our therapy team can help you do just that.
Is insomnia dangerous?
Insomnia can be both directly dangerous and indirectly dangerous.
It is a direct risk factor for physical conditions like weight gain, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and chronic pain. It often results in you feeling sluggish and not having the energy to enjoy your life.
It’s also an indirect danger because it robs you of your ability to remain alert and attentive. Insomnia can make you prone to minor accidents at home and can put you at risk for major accidents on the road.
Thus, there are good, rational reasons to invest in insomnia care. Treating it like the serious condition it is could prolong your life.
Can’t I just take sleeping pills?
Sleeping pills may offer a potential solution, but they may come with some drawbacks.
- They may cause daytime drowsiness, preventing you from performing well at school or work.
- They may be habit-forming.
- Some sleeping pills may have dangerous side effects like sleepwalking, memory problems, headaches, nausea, and vertigo.
- Once you start them, they may be difficult to stop. Many who try suffer from rebound insomnia, which can mean the insomnia returns worse than before.
Finally, sleeping pills don’t always work because they don’t address the underlying issues fueling your insomnia. If you don’t take the time to address those issues, sleepless nights may keep on returning.
How can therapy help with insomnia?
Therapy can help in a variety of ways, such as:
- Offering you skills that you can use to calm fears and quiet your mind.
- Identify the thoughts and behaviors contributing to sleepless nights.
- Helping you identify, address, and process the unresolved emotions and beliefs that may be keeping you up at night.
- Give you safe methods for resetting your sleep schedule.
Our team uses a variety of proven therapeutic techniques to assess and address your needs. In addition to providing you with insomnia care, we can help you identify other strategies that may help you both take control of your life and enjoy it more.
